Spring 2016 Hair Edit

Spring 2016 Hair EditAfter a season of wearing cozy hats to fend off the bitter cold, it’s time to free your follicles. These three picks have been my mainstay hair savers this season so far.  As you can see it’s been all about repair with this trio that includes a spray, an oil and a mask.

First up is the Briogeo Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray. It took about a week of use to see any noticeable difference in my hair. That being said, this is probably the most difference (positive) I’ve seen in my hair since discovering another favourite – the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer. The best way I can think to describe it is that it’s like having the effects of a good haircut without cutting your hair. The brand’s hair mask, the Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask, is great if you’re one for a weekly deep conditioning as it’s not too heavy and it rinses out really well which can be an issue with some hair masks..

Last, but not least, is the Caudalie Divine Oil.  This stuff – use it sparingly if you’ve got finer strands – is great for smoothing any flyaways and adding extra hydration to the ends of hair.  This multi-purpose oil can also be used on your face and body as well.

What hair care products have you been loving for Spring so far?

February Favourites 2016

Oh hi there! Kicking off the first post of this year with a monthly favourites (although this is kind of a dual January/February collection of sorts.)  Firstly, and most used, is the NUXE Rêve de Miel Lip Balm. This is pretty much an all-year-round favourite and hands down the best balm out there (in my opinion.) If the old myth that honey has healing properties is true, this lip balm pretty much proves it.

Up next is the Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist. This has been on my wishlist for quite some time, so it was no surprise that when I recently got my hands on it in a value set it became an instant favourite. It dries fast, smells of actual roses and if you prefer a mist or spray over an oil, as I do, this is a definite try.

You had me at peony.  While I don’t tend to wear perfume much, and after having run out of my staple scent – Flora by Gucci Eau Fraîche – I wasn’t really looking to pickup a new fragrance any time soon. But the past month brought this beauty into my life: Elizabeth and James Nirvana White.  Notes of peony AND lily of the valley? Count me in.

Okay, so scent might also have a major part to play in this pick. Next up, the Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter. Two words: Vanilla Apricot. Besides that, this stuff is non-greasy, hydrates like a boss and is formulated without parabens, sulfates and phthalates.

Rediscovering the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner has been a game-changer this last month or two. It’s both the easiest to apply, and the most reliable liquid liner out there.

What are some of your favourites at the moment?

Summer Hair Heroes

Summer Hair HeroesFeeling the frizz? It’s feeling nearly 40 degrees celsius with the humidity here in Toronto, and that means a mission to try to keep your hair hydrated.  After many a rescue attempt with endless balms, masks and leave-ins, these are the heroes that have been tried and tested – and the most true – after a few rounds in the great Canadian heat.

First up! To give hair a real break from any form of heat, ‘Dont’ Blow it’ by Bumble and bumble is a hair cream that’s meant to help tame your air-dried strands. Now, it must be said, I never air-dry my hair, as my fine follicles tend to just stick to the side of my head and stay wet until the next time I wash my hair. But this cream wasn’t heavy, smelled wonderful and actually gave my hair some body and texture (even a bit of a beachy wave!) – although it didn’t fully keep the frizz away. The directions say to apply to towel-dried hair and scrunch, but I just ran it through damp hair, slept on it, and was able to just get up and go.  One-step summer hair solution in my books – without the heat!

Looking for a UV protectant, I tried out the Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer by Bumble and bumble which says it helps with frizz as well as providing protection from heat and UV radiation. All true. This is an absolute mainstay product and one of the best hair products I’ve tried this year hands down.  It smells like summer in a bottle and while it still doesn’t completely ban the frizz, it definitely makes hair more manageable and noticeably softer without leaving any kind of residue. Did I mention the heavenly smell?

Lastly, if your hair has already been frazzled by the heat and humidity this summer and is in need of some repair, the Repair Blow Dry by Bumble and bumble is supposed to help seal split ends, protect against UV damage and maintain styles for up to three days.  While I didn’t give it the three day test, it did massively help tone down the infamous post-blowdry frizz  that tends to affect those of us with thin, fine hair as well as keep hair smooth throughout the day.

What are your summer hair heroes?

The Ultimate Travel Palette

OnTheRunPalette1Whether it’s a quick jaunt home for the weekend to visit family or a week-long getaway, packing a travel makeup kit can vary from either a simple sunscreen and lip balm combo to an entire cosmetics counter in a bag. Whatever the occasion, the Urban Decay ‘Naked On The Run’ palette is a pretty efficient and space-saving way to go in terms of your travelling beauty arsenal.  I’ll admit when I first held this palette in my hands it was bigger than what I imagined, but tested it out in my average sized toiletries bag and it fit just fine.  The packaging is quite sturdy, so it wouldn’t be an issue to just toss it in your suitcase/travel bag as is without any worries.

If you’re already a fan of the Naked series palettes this is a spot-on take on having all of those separate collections rolled into one neat complete set. The palette includes 6 neutral and versatile eye shadow shades including an illuminating all-over colour ‘5050’ along with both matte and metallic shades ‘Dive’ (metallic rose/gold), ‘Fix’ (a matte taupe), ‘Resist’ (metallic taupe), ‘Dare’ (medium brown matte) and ‘Stun’ (metallic bronze/light gold shimmer.)

Left to right are the shades: Dive, Fix, Resist, Dare, Stun

On top of that, you also have a blusher and bronzer option included, which I think (along with the mascara) are the most handy to have as they can be quickly and easily applied to add just that little something without getting all made up.

The 24/7 Eye Pencil is nice, it glides on pretty smooth and didn’t have any smudging issues which is a plus. Not a massive fan of the lip gloss (mainly due to the shade and shimmer factor and the fact that lip gloss isn’t a go-to for me) but you do get a full-size product and the formula is a winner. The Perversion Mascara is in the shade ‘Blackest Black’ and includes Hairdensyl, which is supposed to support lash growth.

OnTheRunPalette6When in doubt, it’s always best to go minimal I say, and with this palette you’re pretty much covered whether you’re going for a complete look or just need a product or two.

Get Glossy: Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Gloss

Smashbox Lip Gloss Trio 4

As the colder temps make way for warmer days, the dry scaly lips of winter are also (hopefully!) going to be a thing of the seasons past. With the lack of winter winds whipping your hair or your scarf into your face why not take a chance at bringing lip gloss back into the mix (and onto your lips of course!) The ‘Be Legendary Lip Gloss’ by Smashbox is a glassy, lightweight and non-sticky formula that comes in a range of colours from subtle peachy nudes to bright pinks to vivid reds and plums, including these three picks: Legendary (a bright, true red); Azalea (bright pink fuchsia); and Pout (a pearlescent pink.)

Smashbox Lip Gloss Trio 1

Smashbox Lip Gloss Trio 3

Smashbox Lip Gloss Trio 2

While I’m definitely more of a balm or lipstick formula kind of gal, these glosses are really easy to apply and are blendable without being the dreaded sticky hair-magnet that usually keeps me well away from any gloss formulas.  What formula do you prefer: a gloss, balm or lipstick?
