Good luck and happy learning!

Summer Reads 2014

SummerReads2014final

So, yes, life does exist outside of Game of Thrones, that is if I ever manage to get through the fifth book *sigh.*  In the meantime, these non-fiction picks have been great to settle into in the summer sun.  The real sparkler here is Robyn Davidson’s Tracksa self-telling of her journey across the Australian desert with her dog and four camels and a whole lot of determination.  Davidson’s writing makes you feel something in your bones and that, to me, is the best kind of writing.  It is a book I know I will revisit over and over again.  If your the kind of person that gets weak in the knees (in a good way!) at the sound of adventure than this is an absolute must-read.

The Opposite of Loneliness is a collection of both fiction and non-fiction essays and stories by award-winning writer Marina Keegan, who tragically died in a car crash just days after graduating from Yale University at the age of 22.  The title of the collection comes from the essay ‘The Opposite of Loneliness that Marina wrote for a special edition of the Yale Daily News for the graduating Class of ’12.  It would be a seemingly impossible task to describe Marina’s immense talent for word crafting and storytelling, so I’ll just hope you pick up a copy, or borrow mine, either way, her words deserve to be read.

Disclaimer: I have never shopped at Nasty Gal.  There, now that’s out of the way, I was genuinely curious to read #GIRLBOSS by the gal behind the massively successful online fashion website NastyGal.com, Sophia Amoruso.  The inside cover reads:“A #GIRLBOSS is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it.”  Sold.  Written with honesty, humour, a bit a grit and a whole lot of ‘getting it done’ attitude, where Amoruso really hits home in my books is with this: “I have three pieces of advice I want you to remember: Don’t ever grow up. Don’t become a bore. Don’t let the Man get to you. Okay? Cool. Then let’s do this.” Yes, let’s!

What is on your summer reading list?  Have you read any of these picks or are planning to?
